KELPE - MARGINS EP (TEAM ACRE)

Following the superb all-star collaborative 10” from Blue Daisy & Tokimonsta, the continually forward-thinking and ever-diverse Black Acre offshoot Team Acre rolls onwards with a four track EP from electronica stalwart Kelpe. The London-based producer's offering, ‘Margins EP’, is an adroit coalescence of the synthetic off-kilter funk of the current beat scene and the organic timbres and cut and paste aesthetic of the time-honored traditions of hip hop.

Veering from the mystic fretwork on the eponymous opener ‘Margins’ to the soothing elasticity of ‘Taps On’, Kelpe offsets the contrasting elements brilliantly, bringing a human fragility to the robust and futuristic alien frequencies, hiding dense layers of delicate craftwork underneath the immediacy of the EP's more prominent constituents. Live drum rolls burst through the controlled clatter of the rhythmic foundations, stumbling over each other and breaking through the diaphanous haze of the synths as distant melodies are spliced into its framework. Chords swell to bursting point, arpeggios flutter through the percussion and basslines bounce, bend and wiggle.

Harnessing the innate funk and soul of the live drum breaks and loose basslines and fusing them with bold sonics and a woozy otherworldliness, the EP will burrow into both your head and your feet.

The multi-talented producer has also put together a lovely little promo video for the title track from some old footage of a trip to California and Nevada which is definitely worth watching...
