Born in Kyoto, Japan at the tail end of 2009 when they were on tour together, Bomb Zombies is the collaborative project between DJ Nobody and MC Nocando. The two LA-based Low End Theory residents are masters of their respective disciplines and each has an enviable list of credentials, the kind of which most artists can only dream. The tantalizing proposition of the collaboration between the pair has now come to fruition with the release of the ‘Sincerely Yours’ EP on the Hellfyre imprint, eight tracks of brilliantly crafted, forward-thinking hip hop.
DJ Nobody’s productions capture the subtle percussive shifts and simple grooves of Pharrell at his finest, filtered through a skewed modernistic lens. With an understated swagger and deft melodic touch, they are both immediate and inventive, making sure to keep themselves rooted in the dancefloor, allowing the vocals to take the foreground while still providing an infectious bump to proceedings.
MC Nocando takes vocal duties, with Nobody supplying verses on a couple of tracks and some of the hooks. Nocando's background in battle MCing translates well here with quick wit and moments of cerebral lyricism balanced against a healthy amount of tongue-in-cheek braggadocio and playful wordplay, packing in some seriously catchy auto-tuned hooks along the way.
This a vision of how contemporary rap should be done and it would be a crime if the EP doesn't get the recognition it deserves.
