Following a brief hiatus we are returning to Rhythm Factory to start 2012 on the right foot. We have some big plans for the coming year so hopefully this will only be the start. As ever taking the lineup down a different musical path, we have brought together a collection of our favourite producers and DJs who we believe you will be hearing a lot more from next year.

This night will also act as the launch for the brand new website that we are currently working on!

THE EXCHANGE: INTRODUCING...DEAM

I'm sure it is a familiar experience to many - Hours lost down an internet wormhole searching through an endless trail of soundcloud players and youtube videos on the hunt for new music. And anyone that can relate to this will understand the untold gems to be found along the way. With each new artist you find comes an incremental refraction of taste that brings with it a prismatic spread of new paths to divert your attention as you search for something better than the last. 

The organic sequence of events that led me from my interview with Venice Calypso and onto Intreau and then the music of Deam's label Concrete Cut got me thinking how far this trail of discovery could lead and whether it could bring any more discoveries that I may have otherwise missed. And so I have decided to start a new little experiment, of which this feature will be the first chapter. Beginning here with Deam, I am going to invite the featured artist to lead me to the next and see where we end up. Who knows how well this will work, but I thought it was definitely worth finding out....

LIMINAL SOUNDS VOL.10: BLACKWAX

It was reported recently that contrary to all the signs that music as a physical format is dying vinyl sales have risen by 55% in the last year. As the music industry at large continues to try and quell the tide of leaks, poor quality rips and illegal downloads that threaten to bring it down on a day to day basis, it is clear that vinyl still retains a power that is helping it to stay alive. Be it the warmer sound quality, its tangibility or purely the mystery that lies within its grooves, the extensive connotations of vinyl as a bastion of underground electronic music remain. It is with this larger context in mind that I would suggest that the production moniker of Luke Dubuis and Ross Addy, AKA Blackwax, so succinctly captures the spirit of their musical endeavours.

Having regrouped after the first Liminal sounds night in June we are returning to Rhythm Factory with an even bigger lineup, linking up with the Get Some crew to explore some completely different musical avenues with a host of our favourite artists.

We are starting to get geared up for the first Liminal Sounds night, which is now less than two weeks away. In order to promote the night, rather than add yet another mix to your increasingly over-saturated inbox, we wanted to undergo a project that created a musical dialogue between the different artists playing, at once highlighting both the fundamental commonalities between them and their unique musical viewpoints.

The result of this is LS001, two free remixes that were created by artists from our lineup remixing each other.  You can download them below, or from a direct download here.

LIMINAL SOUNDS 01 @ RHYTHM FACTORY, SAT 4TH JUNE

I am pleased to announce that Liminal Sounds will be hosting it's first night in a couple of months at Rhythm Factory. Featuring some of the producers that i have been championing recently, i am really pleased with the lineup, and things are taking shape nicely. I am currently working on some exciting things around the night, so if all goes to plan, you will be hearing more about that shortly.

In the meantime, here is the press release for the night...

WELCOME TO LIMINAL SOUNDS

I guess the first thing to say is sorry for initiating another addition to the already massively over-saturated music blogosphere. I will do my best to refrain from the kind of self-indulgent wankery and pointless laziness that abounds so much on such blogs.

That said, Liminal Sounds aims to delve deeper into the artists and music that interest me and which I feel deserve recognition. The blog will try and provide an insight through both through the opinion and analysis of the audience and the artists. I am aiming to stray away from the standardized mundane content that you see time and time again to try and bring you something new and interesting, which you won't be able to find anywhere else.

As well as in-depth interviews, reviews and opinion features, there will be a series of mixes from up-and-coming artists who I feel people need to hear. There are already some very exciting things on the way, so I’m looking forward to getting that rolling. I also hope to implement some other interesting projects, but I will keep them under my hat for now.

Liminal Sounds will be focusing on - but not restricted to – bass driven electronic music. The songs that excite me are those which defies categorisation, stepping outside of reductive concepts of scene or genre to create something that is both original and lasting, whether this be rhythmically, sonically, lyrically or compositionally. This blog is all about in-betweens - the music that slips between the cracks.

Bass music has finally reached a point where the speed at which it is evolving and mutating is outstripping that at which it can be dissected and named, and I for one think that this is the most exciting things have been in years. The current state of flux within the electronic music world has opened up the landscape and created a dialogue between scenes that promises great things and so I think it is the perfect time to immerse myself in it. I am looking forward to documenting how it plays out.

Hopefully this will serve as an antidote to the innumerable lazy bloggers out there, providing an insight and critical opinion on the music that I enjoy.
